Myofascial release is a hands-on (manual) technique that involves sustaining pressure in 3 dimensions of connective tissue to eliminate pain and restore motion to specific body parts. Fascia is connective tissue that releases under slow and gentle pressure and its purpose is to provide support and protection to different tissues and structures.
Primary Principles for MFR:
- The fascial system takes 60-120 seconds to begin releasing
- Fascia must progress through 3 dimensions to release effectively
- Working on fascia allows for normalized functioning of surrounding areas
Benefits of MFR
- Normalize fluid flow, muscle function, and proprioceptive function
- Decrease stress on tissues around the fascia
Role of fascia
- Supports structure of the body
- Provides joint stability
- Connects muscles throughout the body into functional units
How MFR works
- Works on broader network of muscles that might be causing your pain in a separate area of your body
